Who is Don Angel C. Palanca?
Angel C. Palanca was born on October 1, 1898 in Manila to the couple Tan Quin Lay (who later adopted the name Carlos Palanca) and Cesaria Cano. He was the second eldest among four siblings—Marciana, Angel, Sebastian and Jose.
Angel finished his Bachelor of Arts degree from the San Juan de Letran College in Intramuros. In 1918, he went to the United States and attended the School of Business of Columbia University, from September 1924 to May 1927, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business on June 1, 1927.
After nearly ten years in the United States, Angel came back to the Philippines. He became Don Carlos Palanca’s understudy, learning the ropes of the family distillery business. Later, he became Assistant Manager and finally General Manager of La Tondeña from 1928 until 1954.
Also in November 1928, he married his betrothed, Clara Diluangco, in the traditional Chinese manner with a wedding feast that lasted for three days. To this union were born six children: Angel Jr. (1930), Lourdes (1931), Jose (1933), Augusto (1941), Victorina (1944) and Angelina (1952).
After more than twenty six years with La Tondeña, Angel realized that his real calling was not in the distillery business but in academe. So Angel joined Far Eastern University, initially as a member of the Board of Trustees, then Acting Chairman, Board Secretary, Acting Comptroller, presiding officer of the Executive Committee, and finally Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the last position he held from 1956 to 1976, when he died at age 77.
